Beyond the Classroom: The Vision of LEAP
Higher education has now moved far beyond the traditional classroom. Universities around the world are recognising the need to nurture not only academic excellence, but also leadership, creativity, and a strong sense of social responsibility in students.
At the forefront of this transformation in India is CMR University, Bengaluru, with its pioneering LEAP initiative — Learning, Engagement & Advancement Programmes — which is redefining what it means to be a student in the 21st century.
Redefining Student Potential
The LEAP initiative is designed to empower students to become global thought leaders by providing a unique blend of academic, experiential, and leadership skills.
“LEAP began in 2021. It is an essential skill requirement for students, not a co-curricular activity,” said Parinitha Shetty, Head – Office of Student Affairs. “If your attitude is not right, who will hire you? So we focus on building skills that prepare students for both the workplace and for life. We conduct workshops on wellbeing, empathy, mutual respect, and character development. The LEAP programme is not just a label.”
At its core, LEAP reflects the university’s belief that students should be equipped not just for careers, but for purpose-driven lives as engaged citizens. The initiative is led by the Office of Student Affairs (OSA).
LEAP’s Six Core Streams
LEAP is structured around six core development streams, each addressing a crucial facet of student growth:
- Interdisciplinary Education & Innovation
Encourages students to break down silos and approach problems from multiple perspectives, fostering creativity and innovation. - Leadership, Mentorship & Training
Prepares students to lead with confidence and empathy through structured mentorship and leadership development. - Communication & Writing
Enhances students’ ability to articulate their ideas effectively and persuasively across platforms. - CMRUxCommunity
Builds a strong sense of belonging and engagement within the university and beyond. - Social Impact
Involves students in real-world initiatives, empowering them to become agents of positive societal change. - STEP ONE
Provides foundational support to ease students’ transition into university life and help them build resilience.
Learning Through Real-World Engagement
A defining aspect of LEAP is its emphasis on experiential learning. Students are encouraged to “learn by doing” — applying theoretical knowledge through projects, internships, workshops, and community engagement. This is further strengthened by the integration of Design Thinking across academic curricula.
The CMRUxCommunity and Social Impact streams offer opportunities for meaningful interaction with local communities. Whether through volunteering, awareness campaigns, or collaborative initiatives, students are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones and actively contribute.
Leadership That Lasts
Leadership development forms a cornerstone of the LEAP experience. Through workshops, mentorship programmes, and real-time opportunities, students learn to take on responsibilities both on and off campus.
“Students are assessed from their very first semester on LEAP,” adds Parinitha Shetty. “Everything they do beyond academics is recorded under a LEAP point system, which is reflected at graduation. We conduct leadership boot camps, host intra-collegiate fests, and facilitate activities in theatre, drama, dance, and music — all led by students. This develops teamwork and public speaking abilities through debates and discussions.”
With 80–85 clubs ranging from writing and coding to performing arts and hackathons, each aligned with NAAC accreditation guidelines, students are encouraged to find and express their passions.
A Future Shaped by LEAP
CMR University’s emphasis on experiential learning, design thinking, community engagement, and leadership ensures that LEAP is more than a programme — it is a catalyst shaping the next generation of thinkers, leaders, and change-makers.
